Weight Loss: Week 1
I've struggled with weight my entire life... literally starting when I was born. I was 8 weeks premature and until 5th grade I was too thin. My parents, a surgeon and a physical therapist, were constantly trying to get me to gain weight as I was consistently below the 5th percentile. Then, in the course of a year I became a "woman"... stocky, curves, boobs... the whole 9 yards. My body image was totally screwed up in 5th grade and I just wanted to be like all the other girls. Who wants to wear a bra before they have to?
I vividly remember switching schools in 6th grade and being the "new girl with the big butt"... which apparently was a compliment, but still.. the comments created an even more screwed up body image. From then on, I was constantly trying to lose weight - who wants to be "thunder thighs" or "big butt" even when you weigh 115 pounds and have a size 25 inch waist?
I was on a constant journey to find the secret recipe to weight loss success. During my senior year, I lost 10 pounds for prom, but gained it back immediately after prom had passed and the journey continued... I could go on and on and explain how I gained the "sophomore ten" rather than the "freshman fifteen", lost weight for my wedding, gained it back, but you get the picture....
Then one day I sat down and thought about the REAL reason I was successful losing weight for prom. Yes, I was only eating 1200 calories a day and ran for 30 minutes (5 days a week), but if I was to pinpoint the secret to success... it was my female chorus class. In January 2010, I announced to my group of 8 sopranos and altos that I had a goal. I wanted to lose 10 pounds in 4 months and I wanted them to hold me accountable. Eat lunch with me, ask me how it's going, suggest recipes... and they were awesome!!!
So 6 years later and I'm at a similar point in my life: I have a goal. I want to lose 40 pounds in a year and I've decided that PTP is the perfect platform to make this possible. My friends, family, and blogger babes will be my "chorus girls" and maybe, just maybe I can be that person for someone else.
Over the next year (aka Year 3 for PTP), I will be sharing my favorite healthy recipes, exercise tips and tricks, weigh-ins, and musings. I encourage you to offer me any advice that inspires you, works for you, and challenges you; as well as any questions you may have for me. This post is a sensitive subject for me and I promise to remain transparent and honest. I seriously can't wait to go through this journey with you... lets dive right in!
